Stargazers have been reporting a strange sighting in the skies over southern Queensland last night.

Numerous residents on the Darling Downs have called the ABC to report a milky glowing cloud and lights moving slowly across the night sky between 3am and 4am AEST.

Former meteorologist and amateur astronomer, Mark Yandle, from Millmerran says he thinks it could have been an explosion in space.

"High in the south-west there was a cloud of gas about twice the size of a full moon and as you watched it over, say, the course of an hour it moved slowly north-eastward and gradually got larger and at the centre of this cloud there was even brighter bits to me that sounds as though it was an explosion of some sort in outer space," he said.

just got out of bed and turned on the radio and they were talking to people who had witnessed this phenonomon. I live in QLD australia, apparently the witnesses said their was a flash of light in the heavens about 3am this morning followed by around very thin almost gaseous glowing cloud that grew over the space of 10 mim to twice the diameter of the moon. A LOCAL astronomer said he believes it was some kind of explosion in space, another reported that he felt this cloud was circleing our planet. I was wondering if this may have something to do with the warnings from a few other posts with regards to this energy wave, this was seen west of the southern cross, people are still talking and describing what they seen, they all say it was the size of the full moon only fuzzy. i dont think the local radio station would have anything on there site as yet , however I will try to get a link to confirm what I am saying is true.

get this the radio anouncer just said she has been rining around the local observertories and they were all asleep. Can you believe that, even she paid them out. the radio broadcaster is ABC queensland, local toowoomba, im not very good with finding things on the net I will keep trying, perhaps someone else would like to help.

most of the people were a bit scared as they couldnt understand what it was, one poor woman grabbed her husband and wanted to run. there was apparently no noise when the flash of light occured.Another guy said he was walking at 3am ? anyway he ran back home to take a photo, so hopefully they might use his photo if the station descides to keep following up on this story. If this belinda sanders who is the woman representer at this time slot has anything to do with it, then im sure they will, as she is constantly referring back to this story and asking people to keep ringing the ststion with their eyewitness accounts.

I have emailed the station and requested that they please put this news story up on their site.Its 8am now, perhaps the team who deal with this has not started THEIR shift as yet. pretty pathetic really. I dont believe that all observatories were asleep, BS. There is only one local astronomer who says he witnessed the event, he is the one who believes it was an explosion of some discription in space, they just ran the story on the local news and they had him and the guy that was walking when he witnesses the event, talking about what they seen. Surley there is someone looking into this. I know that some of our observatories out here exchange info with NASA AS a few years ago when I rang a few of them with wanting some information from them with regards to another strange event and they told me that their telescopes were pointed in a different direction collecting info for NASA. I wouldnt be surprised if this story, just like many others just goes into oblivian. Makes me really frustrated.

just heard that this event was also witnessed on the other side of the country as well, the guy said that some online astronomy sites are discussing this event. He didnt say what sites, so I will do a search and see what I can find.
